5th Annual Bicycle Party and Benefit Hosted by Redbones

Davis Square, Somerville, MA - Redbones BBQ will donate all proceeds from its annual bicycle bash to the Somerville Community Youth Program's Bike Project and the New England Mountain Bike Association (NEMBA) for the second year. The event takes place, rain or shine, outside the restaurant at 55 Chester Street from 5 pm to midnight on Monday, May 15, 2000. Tickets are $10.00 and include bicycle valet parking, a Redbones sandwich, beverage, and a raffle ticket.

Somerville Community Youth Program Director Rick Jarvis credits Redbones' owner Robert Gregory for increasing community awareness and involvement in the youth bike project. "As important as the donation we received following last year's benefit," says Jarvis, "were the relationships Robert helped us establish so we could offer more to our teen riders." New supporters since last May include NEMBA which has mapped out trail rides and provided volunteer ride leaders and Paramount Bike Repair which has offered a series of maintenance clinics. The program is for kids over thirteen with loaners available for those who do not own bikes; reinforcing the emphasis on bike education, safety and maintenance, all bikes owned by participants must go through pre-inspection before joining a group ride.

Gregory, a cycling enthusiast, introduced first-in-the-nation bicycle valet parking at Redbones five years ago to provide the free safe keeping of bicycles for riders visiting Davis Square- every day, year round. The annual bicycle party is a celebration of the traditional beginning of New England's riding season and held in conjunction with National Bike to Work Week. Event sponsors, who donate raffle items for the drawing, include Ace Wheel Works, Independent Fabrication, Kryptonite Corp., Massachusetts Bicycle Coalition (MassBike), Paramount Bike Repair, The Ride magazine, and Seven Cycles.
