Bike the Charles 2008

This year to kick off Metro Boston's 9-day Bike Week, we decided to go entirely beyond the Paul Dudley White Bikepath and ride the Upper Charles Reservation Trail, the Riverpath in Newton, and a bit more.

The Blue Heron Bridge is a highlight of the ride.

Details

  • Where: start at the granite pillar with a blue heron at the trail entrance in Watertown Square
  • When: Leave at 10am; plan on arriving by 9:45am to organize. The ride shouldn't take over 2 hours from whenever we start.
  • Distance: about 15 miles.
  • Pace: Very relaxed, probably 5-8 MPH.
  • Terrain: flat.
  • Route: largely (70%) off-road paved path; some brief connections on quiet streets (20%) and some unpaved pathways (10%).

Getting There

Bicycle

Bike up either side of the Charles River to Watertown Square . The path entrance is on the north side of the river.

Take Mt. Auburn St., Main St. (US 20) from Waltham, or Galen St. from Newton Corner

T

There is no easy way to get to Watertown Square on the T with a bike.

Car

There is a town lot northwest of the Square and on-street parking, too.
