Bike Night

MassBike's
Accomplishments
in 2001

Bike Night will once again bring together the Massachusetts bicycle movement in our annual celebration of MassBike's accomplishments. We will report on the state of cycling in Massachusetts, recognize outstanding contributors, and hear from both industry and government leaders who support our efforts.

All proceeds from Bike Night will benefit MassBike for the purpose of increasing staffing so that it can be more effective in its mission to improve conditions for cycling in Massachusetts.

As you know, bicycle advocacy successes are not always immediately tangible, but here are just some of things we've done in 2001:

Developing the Bicyclists' Bill of Rights and Responsibilities, which has successfully reported out of Committee in the state legislature
Applying relentless pressure and finally convincing the City of Boston to hire its first ever bike coordinator (our own Paul Schimek)
Working with the Governor's Highway Safety Bureau to put together a bike safety poster that was distributed to every bike shop in the state
Working with the State Senate Post Audit Committee on its report criticizing the state's lack of progress on bikepath building
Coordinating Senate President Birmingham's statewide bike ride flawlessly - soon after which he announced $2.5 million for rail trails in an interim budget (which passed.)
Through his creative and diligent efforts Executive Director Tim Baldwin has enhanced the reputation and reach of MassBike, evidenced by the unprecedented newspaper, radio and television coverage we have garnered this year.
