Sample Bike Week Proclamation for OUR TOWN
- Whereas Bicyclists employ a clean, quiet, and energy-efficient
mode of transportation;
- Whereas Bicycling is a healthy form of exercise and can help to
incorporate physical activity into the daily routine;
- Whereas More use of the bicycle for transportation can improve the
quality of life of OUR TOWN;
- Whereas Bicycling can often be the fastest way to travel in
OUR TOWN because of traffic congestion and scarce parking;
- Whereas Bicycling is an excellent way to visit OUR TOWN's
historic neighborhoods, parks, and scenic areas;
- Whereas Thousands of OUR TOWN's residents and visitors
use bicycles for travel, pleasure, or as part of their work every day;
- Whereas Bicycles are used by OUR TOWN's workers as part
of their official duties in [for example Police, Parks, Transportation,
and EMS departments];
- Whereas Under city regulations, bicycles are vehicles and by
state law bicyclists enjoy all the rights and privileges of motorists to
use the public roads unhindered from harassment;
- Whereas May has been designated as National Bike Month since
1942 by the League of American Bicyclists, the third week in May is Bike
Week, and Tuesday, May 18, 1999 is National Bike to Work Day;
Now, therefore be it resolved that:
- May 16-22, 1999 shall be observed as Bikeweek;
- Tuesday, May 18, 1999 shall be observed as Bike to Work Day;
- OUR TOWN's residents, visitors, and employees are encouraged to
participate in these events by learning safe bicycling skills, putting
their bicycles in good working order, attending such festivities as may be
organized, and bicycling more, for both transportation and recreation.
