MassBike Tour '98

Preparation

Training and Conditioning:

The MassBike Tour is not the the time to begin training. Before beginning the Tour, you should be comfortable with rides of 35 or 40 miles a day. We recommend riding 75-100 miles/week for 4-6 weeks before the Tour. One the other hand, the Tour is doable by anyone with the recommended training base. Rest stops with fluids and nutritious snacks will occur each day at approximately 15-mile intervals, plus a full lunch at the halfway point.

One of the things that makes Massachusetts the perfect state for such a tour is its varied terrain. If you've been to the Berkshires you've likely "oohed" and "ahhed" over the lovely hills. Proper training will ensure they stay lovely and not loathesome. We want you to have fun! Our final two days will cover the flattest terrain; before then, expect some ups and downs every day.

Things to bring:

  • Your helmet. Riders without helmets will not be allowed on the tour.
  • Sleeping gear and personal baggage. Two pieces of luggage per rider, counting your tent and sleeping bag. Gear must be clearly identified.
  • A well-known and well-maintained bike that fits you like a glove. We recommend a tune-up shortly before the ride.
  • A sufficiently trained body. You and your bike should be very familiar with the look and texture of asphalt.
