Tour of the Middle Neponset Valley: Saturday, April 29, 2000, 10:00 am on the bridge in Mattapan Square, Boston.; Join MassBike/MetroBoston and the Boston Natural Areas Fund on a tour of the bikeways of the Neponset River Valley upstream from the Neponset Trail, which is currently under cunstruction. We will ride on miles of paved shoulders which are potential bike lanes, a scenic gravel path through a wetland, and over Route 128 on the famous Bridge to Nowhere. The ride will be under 15 miles and is fairly flat, though there is some scrambling getting off the Bridge to Nowhere. 8th Annual Bike to the Sea Day< /b>: Saturday June 10, 8:00 am registration, 8:30 ride from the Square One Mall in Saugus.; 16- and 40-mile rides to raise money for Bike to the Sea, a bicycle and greenway advocacy organization in Lynn, Saugus, Malden, Revere, Everett, and Medford. THere will be a continental brunch at Revere Beach.; $10 for individuals, $25 for families of up to 4,+ $5/additional child, + $5 after May 28. Helmets are required. Children must be 8 or older or towed by an adult. Riders under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.; Riders with the East Coast Greenway WAVE ride will join the ride this year to carry a water bottle up the coast. To join the 40-mile long ride to Newburyport you should have an MBTA pass and train fare or be prepared to ride back.; Proceeds promote bicycle paths and bicycle safety in these communities.; Volunteers receive free registration and a T-shirt. Project Bread's Tour de Boston: Sunday, September 17, 2000, Boston Common; A a one-day bike-a-thon through the neighborhoods of Boston and beyond, to raise funds to feed hungry people in Massachusetts. This new event is being organized by Project Bread, Massachusetts' leading anti-hunger organization.; There will be two routes, both beginning and ending in downtown Boston. There will be an in-city route (approx. 40K/25-miles). For those seeking a greater challenge, a longer route (approx. 100K/60-miles) will travel through Boston and into the scenic countryside outside the city.; For riders on the 25 mile route, there is a minimum pledge of at least $100. Nicole Reinhart Memorial Ride: Saturday, September 23, 8:30 am at the Cafe Escadrille parking lot on Cambridge St. in Burlington.; 9:00 am at Robbins Farm, a park and recreation center in Arlington on Eastern Ave. just south of the water tower on Park Ave.; Join the cycling community to remember bicycle racer Nicole Reinhart, who died when she hit a tree in a race in Arlington last weekend. This will be an easy, casual pace ride from Burlington to the Park on Eastern Ave in Arlington for a moment of reflection, then down past "the tree" on Highland Ave and either return to Burlington, or continue on a longer ride.; Please try to either bike ride or carpool to the parking lot or the recreation center on Eastern Ave to keep cars at a minimum.

Assabet River Rail Trail Cleanup: Saturday, Oct 21, 9:00 am to noon, Hudson St near Mechanic St. Marlborough; We have word that the week of Oct 23 two of our state senators will be touring the rail trail in Marlboro and Hudson. The Marlboro section between Hudson and Ash St. would make a much better impression with a little cleaning. Our last major cleanup was spring 1998 and there are some tall weeds hiding a very nice section of trail. A few hours of cutting, pruning, raking and picking up cans, bottles and paper will restore it.; For those willing to do some heavier clearing we will cut some heavier overgrowth and fallen trees at the end of the section last cleared, toward Ash St.; Wear old clothes and gloves. There are occasional small patches of poison ivy. Bring pruning shears, loppers or a rake. Bring a chain saw if you would like to cut some of the fallen trees beyond the cleared section.; Rt 85 east from Hudson: take a right at the 1st traffic light in Marlboro onto Hudson St. Take a left at the left turn lane to follow Hudson St. Proceed about 1/2 mile past the next stop sign.; Rt 20 west from Sudbury: stay on Main St through the center. Take a right onto Mechanic St at the 1st lights past the center, just before the colorfully painted church on the right. Stay on Mechanic St for about 4 blocks and turn right on Hudson St.; Rt 495: take Rt 85 connector to 2nd traffic light. Turn right onto Rt 85 east and follow directions above.; Park on Jefferson St. just beyond the trail crossing or along the side of the parking lot across the street away from the businesses.
8th Annual Tour de Somerville: Saturday, October 21, 10:00 am, Seven Hills Park, behind the Davis Sq. T station on Holland St. and the Somerville Theatre; Rain Date: Sun. Oct. 22, but only if it's POURING; t's our easy-going fun ride through beautiful, bikeable Somerville. All ages are welcome to join us as we explore the sights and sounds of the City of Seven Hills. A short loop returns to Davis Sq. around 11, and then a longer ride continues, ending around 1 PM. NEW THIS YEAR: A number of LOCALLY-OWNED businesses have contributed gift certificates for a free drawing to be held at the end of the ride. Thunderhead Alliance Northeast Bicycle Advocates' Conference: Saturday, October 28, Hartford Connecticut; Cosponsored by the Connecticut Bicycle Coalition; The Thunderhead Alliance, a national coalition of state and regional bicycle advocacy organizations, is hosting a one-day workshop to train volunteers, board members, or bicyclists who want to become more effective in advocating for bicyclists.; Workshops cover important subjects including:

Effective media and marketing skills
Strategic planning and execution

Working with trail volunteers from Appalachian Mountain Club, Grand Trunk Trail Blazers, Opacum Land Trust, Quinebaug-Shetucket National Heritage Corridor, Towns of Southbridge and Sturbridge, National Park Service and hosted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, create new links in the fabled Grand Trunk Trail network through Southbridge and Sturbridge.
We\022ll be cuffing brush and making drainage improvements along several new sections of the trail along the Quinebaug River in Southbridge and Sturbridg e.

Emerald Necklace Greenway Ride

The Emerald Necklace Greenway project will host its first monthly ride on the Emerald Necklace from Jamaica Plain to the Charles River and back. We will follow the Necklace from Franklin Park to the Charles River, on off-road paths where they exist, over at least 90% of the distance. Harbortrail Tour
Sunday, November 5, at 11:00 am at Ruggles Station on the MBTA Orange Line
Conceived as a multipurpose recreational pedestrian and bicycle trail, the proposed trail will link the existing Melnea Cass Boulevard and Fort Point Channel corridors to connect Jamaica Plain, Lower Roxbury and South End neighborhoods to the emerging Boston Harbor, its Islands and Waterfront.
Boston Transportation Department(BTD) officials will be on hand to announce the hiring of a landscape planner at the start of our tour. The planner will be available for questions. The tour will feature stops for presentations on physical development within the corridor by representatives from abutters such as Northeastern University, Crosstown Development, Biosquare/BU Medical, the Children's Museum and Fan Pier.
The harbortrail Coalition comprises significant support from residential, institutional, and corporate abutters. Working in cooperation with the BTD, the Harbortrail Coalition has been awarded Federal ISTEA funds to further study its schematic vision for the trail. We enjoy support and participation from allied groups such as MassBike, WalkBoston and Adaptive Environments Inc (ADA advocacy group).
Refreshments will be provided along the ride, and there will be a lunch at the end, provided by Spaulding and Slye.

We will be starting at Sara Lassio's former workplace, St. Elizabeth's Hospital, and proceeding to the site of the accident and her home on Winchester St. We will also be visiting the site of Ruth Michler's cycling death on Nov. 1st, on Forsyth St. near Northeastern University. Speakers will be arranged.
